Speech by Philippe Crevoisier at the ESIREM diploma ceremony

Nietzsche’s text that I read to the students:

Thus spake Zarathustra/Part one/Of the despisers of the body

The senses and the mind are only instruments and toys: behind them still lies the self. The self, too, seeks with the eyes of the senses and listens with the ears of the spirit.

Always the self listens and seeks: it compares, subdues, conquers and destroys. He reigns, and also dominates the self.

Behind your feelings and thoughts, my brother, stands a more powerful master, an unknown sage — his name is self. He inhabits your body, he is your body.

There is more reason in your body than in your best wisdom. And who knows exactly why your body needs your best wisdom?

Your self laughs at your self and its antics. “What are these leaps and flights of thought to me? he said. A detour towards my goal. I am the edge of the self and the prompter of its ideas. »

The self says to the ego: “Experience pain! » And the I suffers and reflects on no longer suffering — and it is to this end that it must think.

The self says to the me: “Experience joys! » Then the self rejoices and thinks of rejoicing often again – and it is to this end that it must think.
